OnePlus, being part of the BBK group, has the advantage of tapping into the expertise of Oppo and Vivo to ensure that its inaugural foldable smartphone offers an exceptional user experience. This will become more evident once the phone is officially launched. Initially, there were rumors referring to the foldable device as the OnePlus V Fold, but recent reports suggest it will be marketed as the OnePlus Open. As there is uncertainty regarding the final name, we will use both names interchangeably in this article.

OnePlus Open foldable phone: Design and specs

OnePlus Open

Initially mid-August, initial renders of the OnePlus Open Fold were leaked, showcasing its book-style design. These news were based on early release plan of this smartphone and had some unclear details. Nevertheless, they provided a glimpse of the substantial circular camera module on the back, featuring Hasselblad branding, and the foldable’s wide aspect ratio, which bears a resemblance to the Google Pixel Fold.

In early August, more precise renders of the OnePlus Open were revealed, based on a pre-production unit. These initial specification and news showed notable design discrepancies compared to the initial set of images, notably a broader cover display. This alteration in design made the foldable appear similar to Oppo’s Find N2, suggesting the potential for the two of same compony to share a fundamental design, with OnePlus incorporating some minor modifications of its own.

In the updated images, the camera island on the rear appears even larger, featuring a simpler ‘H’ logo instead of Hasselblad branding. Additionally, these images reveal the inclusion of a new LiDAR or Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor within the camera housing. The renders also provide a clear view of the foldable’s faux leather back. Notably, OnePlus’s iconic Alert Slider will be part of its first foldable device, positioned on the left side of the chassis.

While it’s not officially confirmed, there are strong rumors suggesting that the OnePlus Open will sport a 6.3-inch OLED cover screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. This, combined with its wider aspect ratio, is expected to improve the functionality of the external display. The internal folding screen is rumored to be a 7.8-inch flexible OLED with a 2K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Initially, OnePlus planned to use a BOE panel, but recent reports indicate a switch to a Samsung-supplied display.

OnePlus added to the excitement surrounding the Open by taking a playful jab at the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 during Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event in late July 2023. This move essentially confirmed that OnePlus’s foldable device would indeed be named the “Open.”

OnePlus is known for its high-performance smartphones, and the OnePlus Fold is expected to uphold this tradition. Leaks from late June suggest that the phone will be equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. To keep everything running, it will feature a 4,800mAh battery with support for 67W fast charging. While this may not match the blazing 100W fast charging of the OnePlus 11, it should still provide a quick charge, taking around 30 to 40 minutes to fill up.

Additional rumored specs include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, OnePlus’s iconic Alert Slider, and dual-SIM 5G connectivity. Notably, the hinge of the OnePlus Fold is expected to be exceptionally durable, with rumors suggesting it could endure as many as 400,000 folds — twice the durability we’ve seen in devices from Samsung.

OnePlus Open foldable phone: Cameras

OnePlus Open

If the leaked specifications hold true, the OnePlus Open may not feature the same camera configuration as the OnePlus 11. To potentially keep costs in check, OnePlus might opt for older 48MP sensors.

According to reports, the OnePlus Open is expected to incorporate a triple-camera system, consisting of a 48MP primary camera, a 48MP ultra-wide camera, and a 64MP telephoto camera. For selfies, there will be a 32MP camera on the external display and a 20MP shooter on the inner folding display. The device will continue to carry the Hasselblad branding, suggesting that the OnePlus Open’s photos will maintain a similar color profile to that of the OnePlus 11.

OnePlus Open foldable phone: Software

OnePlus Open

As we all know apart from hardware foldable phone must be optimized with best software to fully leverage it’s uniqueness. In this regard, Samsung has surged ahead of its competitors, as One UI incorporates numerous enhancements specifically tailored for foldable devices.

Previously, OnePlus’ OxygenOS enjoyed significant popularity among the Android community. However, its quality and stability began to decline after OnePlus merged its codebase with Oppo’s ColorOS. It took more than a year for improvements to materialize following this union. Nevertheless, OxygenOS has since struggled to regain the community’s trust, largely due to OnePlus’s sluggish update rollout for its devices.

For the OnePlus V Fold to achieve success, OnePlus must make substantial additions to OxygenOS to capitalize on the inner folding screen. These additions should include new features designed specifically for foldable devices, enhancing their usability and functionality. Furthermore, improvements to the taskbar to facilitate multitasking would be crucial for delivering a seamless and productive user experience.

Notably, OnePlus has recently announced its plan to officially reveal OxygenOS 14 on September 25th. Depending on the release schedule for this foldable device, it’s possible that it could launch with the latest version of Android right from the start, which would be a significant advantage in terms of software optimization and functionality.

OnePlus Open

As per Jambor’s post on X, which was formerly known as Twitter, it appears that the OnePlus Open is anticipated to be launched on October 19. This launch date is notably scheduled about two weeks after Google’s expected announcement of the Pixel 8 series on October 4. It seems clear that OnePlus may have chosen this timing to allow the excitement around the Pixel series to settle before introducing its next significant offering in the smartphone market. This strategic spacing of announcements can help OnePlus generate more attention and focus on its own product reveal without being overshadowed by the Pixel series launch.
